Weekend Round-Up

|
Happy Sunday, Chic readers! Hope your weekend was filled with great books, writing breakthroughs, and end-of-summer fun. Alas, it's time for another work week. Luckily, you don't have to go into Monday unprepared. Here are our favorite publishing blogs and news stories from last week to help catch you up:

Friend of the blog, Elyssa Papa, landed a superstar agent this week - Kim Witherspoon of InkWell Management. Congratulations again, Elyssa!

Jessica Burkhart's fourth Canterwood Crest novel, Triple Fault, officially hit stores on Tuesday. My little sister (securely Team Jacob) stayed up way too late reading TF and is already bugging me about when the next one comes out (Best Enemies: October 20th!).

Carrie Ryan, author of the hauntingly wonderful The Forest of Hands and Teeth, blogged about how long it took her from original idea to publication. A must read for any aspiring author.

In a similar vein Chic favorite, Deanna Raybourn, blogged about the manuscripts that came before her debut, Silent in the Sanctuary. If you haven't read SITS, you should. And if you have any manuscripts sitting under your bed, start reading Deanna's blog - she's just as inspiring as she is talented.

Agent Nathan Bransford proved again why so many aspiring authors follow his blog, with this week's complete glossary of publishing. If you've ever wondered about the mysterious acronyms of publishing - from ARC to POD - this is the guide to study.

Agent and Author, Lucienne Diver, wrote a great article in response to the questions she is often asked about the Young Adult genre, including word counts, relevance, and language.

The Hugo Awards were given out earlier this week! Among the winners: Neil Gaiman for Best Novel and John Scalzi for Best Related Book. Congratulations to all the recipients!

Authors Kelly Parra and Tina Ferraro are using August as a month to spotlight multi-cultural YA reads and have some great recommendations on their joint blog, YA Fresh.

William Morris Endeavor Entertainment continued to take a stand against the Google Book Settlement and advised their clients to opt out of the settlement.

Over at Petit Fours and Hot Tamales, guest blogger Marcia James wrote a great post about the strengths and weaknesses of Author-Initiated Promotion.

Do you want to develop a case of serious author website envy? Check out the illustrations that debut author, Sara Lindsey, commissioned for her new site. Gorgeous, non?

If you're looking for an agent, then you should be reading Casey McCormick's ongoing blog series spotlighting individual agents each week. This week: Jill Corcoran of Herman Agency, Inc.

Do you love historical romances? Check out The Season, a site dedicated to new historicals and maintained by author, Beverley Kendall. She's having a fantastic launch party all this month with a ton of free books given away every day!

Thank you so much for the congrats and shout out! You have all been so awesome to me; I am so overwhelmed by all the kindness and support I've received.

You ladies are so on top of things. I picked up Triple Fault at B&N yesterday. Kiddo is still half way across the country and working on the previous installment, but I get updates daily about Jacob finally calling Sasha and Cally talking to her again and OMG! The wayward email. How does that evil chick know about her email?

Seriously, we need to hook up your sister and my kiddo. Except my kiddo reads really, really slow. LOL!

My nieces and I are totally Team Jacob. I've asked Jess for spoilers but she's not talking. She did tell me very cryptically that I should never trust her when it comes to the boys. What the heck does that even mean?lol. One of my nieces got a signed copy of the Triple Fault and she was insanely over the moon. Other niece is deeply envious-but she just started the books whereas her sis has been reading them all along.

Great rundown.

I must have missed the rundown on one of the boys. What's the opposite of Team Jacob? LOL!

Elyssa, we can't say congratulations enough! We're all so very proud of you, chica!

Terri, we definitely need to hook them up...and Kel's nieces too! And - ha! - those updates sound familiar. You even mention the Canterwood books and Laine (the sister) goes off about Sasha and Eric and Jacob and how Jessica needs to write faster. It's awesome how much they love the books!

Kel, I told my little sister about your niece's signed TF and she's also super jealous! Jess is so sneaky about her love triangles, but at least we're assured that she'll have enough awesome Canterwood drama to last the rest of the series! Though, all of our little girlies may go crazy with the Jacob/Eric delimma, before then. ;-)

So Eric is the other one? When kiddo talks about him it's as if he's clearly not in the race for Sasha so I had no idea there was a battle of sorts. Interesting...

Love these round-ups! Heading over to read the post by Carrie Ryan right now.

Big congrats to Elyssa!

Ter, yep, Eric is the anti-Jacob.lol. He's a perfectly good kid and Sasha seems to think he's an excellent kisser but the nieces aren't having any of it. These are very crackalicious books!

Ter and Mer, we definitely need to get the kidlets together. I'm just so thrilled they're reading. One of my nieces is crazy in love with reading like me so she's glad to have a new series to check out. And the other niece hasn't ever been into reading as much as she is now. Jess is awesome.:)
